Chris Christie, a Republican and Trump ally, said during ABC’s election night coverage, “but they didn’t like the president more.” “I heard lots of people say they didn’t like Menendez,” former Gov. Trump’s endorsement Tuesday caught his campaign by surprise Hugin hadn’t requested it. “I certainly wouldn’t blame anybody but myself.”īut throughout the campaign, Hugin had sought to distance himself from the president, describing himself as “a different kind of Republican” and running ads claiming he would stand up to the president. When asked about Trump’s role in the race Tuesday night, Hugin declined to place any blame on the president. In the final weeks of the campaign, Menendez ran ads saying, “To stop Trump, stop Hugin,” and gleefully tweeted “Thank you” when the president gave an eleventh-hour Twitter endorsement to Hugin on Tuesday afternoon.
BOB HUGIN ENDORSEMENTS TRIAL
Menendez, for his part, used the anti-Trump sentiment in the state to complete his comeback from a corruption trial and ethics admonishment. Hugin donated more than $200,000 to help get Trump elected and served as a Trump delegate to the Republican National Convention in 2016 - connections that Hugin tried to downplay but ultimately contributed to his defeat in a deeply blue New Jersey. Trump was indeed a big factor in the race, just not the way the president suggested.
